Woodside Ferry Village Supports Carbon Reduction and Local Supply Opportunities

Categories: B&M News

Woodside Ferry Village has taken the next step in looking at its environmental responsibilities by installing a B&M Food Waste Station at its Wirral waterfront food and drink venue.

The management team at Woodside Ferry Village, which opened for business in June 2019 wanted to minimise the impact of food waste produced at the food hall.

In obtaining comprehensive guidance and advice, discussions were held with local, Carbon Neutral B&M Waste Services, who highlighted that with the venue hosting six different food concessions, the safe and efficient disposal of food waste was a priority which their latest innovation, the B&M Food Waste Station would assist with.

The state-of-the-art B&M Food Waste Station has food from a caddy scraped in, before food waste is macerated into a liquid form and pumped directly into a built-in de-watering system, forcing out excess liquid. This liquid is fed directly into the drain resulting in a greatly reduced volume of food waste, which is then collected in small, easily managed, lidded bins, ready for onward processing at an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant. AD produces biogas, a methane-rich gas that can be used as a fuel, and digestate, a source of nutrients that can be used as a fertiliser.

The process reduces waste volume by 80%, thus reducing the frequency of waste collections and therefore both cost and the carbon footprint.

Sharon Stanton, Managing Director at Woodside Ferry Village was very keen to have this equipment implemented with B&M Waste; “It was always key to our business plan for Woodside Ferry Village that, wherever possible, we should look to reduce our carbon footprint and introduce initiatives which would support this.

“B&M Waste Services helped us to move forward and we can see clear advantages through using the B&M Food Waste Station, such as short processing times creating lower operating costs, a self cleaning system reducing staff time managing and processing any food waste, and lower waste collection costs by up to 80% through reducing food waste volume and weight requiring collection.”

David Carter, Account Manager at B&M Waste Services said, “Having been Carbon Neutral since 2011, minimising the environmental impact of business waste is our priority. We are working with more and more businesses looking to minimise their food waste output, and the B&M Food Waste Station coupled with our eco-friendly food waste collection fleet, allow us to offer a consummate food waste service, alongside our other total waste management solutions. We praise Woodside Ferry Village for taking this step in reducing their food waste impact and cost, and welcome contact from other businesses looking to do the same, who can view this and other waste reduction and recycling equipment at our state-of-the-art recycling innovation centre in Bromborough.”

Woodside Ferry Village is a new and innovative food-hall concept, located in the heart of Birkenhead’s waterfront overlooking the River Mersey enjoying an unparalleled view of the Liverpool skyline.

Developed by the Woodside Area Community Interest Company (WACIC), Woodside Ferry Village has become a popular destination offering a range of national and international foods provided the various concession vendors, a world of culinary wealth under one roof offering Italian Pizza, Mexican, Thai Street Food, Smokehouse BBQ, Gastro Pub, and award winning Ice Cream menus, together with drinks at The Tipsy Duck Bar.
