Mill Gate Shopping Centre Recycling Heroes Hit Zero

Championing the importance of shopping centre recycling, Mill Gate shopping centre reached an impressive environmental goal by sending zero waste to landfill in 2017.

The shopping centre has worked with its waste management supplier B&M Waste Services in Trafford Park since 2015 to reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste going to landfill.

In 2015 Mill Gate achieved less than five per cent of its waste going to landfill. During 2016 is was down to almost two per cent and last year none of the 715 tonnes of waste went to landfill.

Mill Gate’s team works hard on site to separate waste into recyclable and non-recyclable, with retailers given containers to separate types of waste and further champion their shopping centre recycling initiative. It is then taken to B&M Waste Services and hand sorted, removing all recyclables such as cardboard, wood and metals.

Non-recyclable rubbish is pressed into bales and taken to the Combined Heat and Power facility where energy is harvested from the residual waste to produce electricity and steam for thermal heating via the district heating system.

Diverting waste from landfill has reduced Mill Gate’s indirect carbon emissions by more than 400 tonnes, equivalent to more than 200,000 of miles driven in a diesel or almost 350 trees saved.

The Mill Gate team keeps retailers abreast of the Centre’s environmental achievements with a quarterly report to let them know the percentages of waste that have been recycled, recovered and converted into refuse derived fuel.

Mill Gate centre manager Marie Gribben said: “We are extremely proud to have achieved zero to landfill in 2017. Achieving this goal is down to the hard work and dedication of our team and our retailers. We will work hard in 2018 to make it another zero to landfill year.”

Paul Newton, corporate account Manager at B&M Waste Services, said “It is the forward-thinking approach of Mill Gate shopping centre management and staff which has led to them segregating their recycling from their general waste.

“Year on year they’ve increased their recycling levels and they’ve now achieved 100 per cent diversion of waste from landfill, through using our Carbon Neutral waste management service. They won a prestigious Green Apple award for the recycling efforts and we continue to work together to review and improve their waste and recycling scheme. Congratulations to Mill Gate.”
