Retail Waste Management

Our retail waste management package reflects increasing legislation in the area. The Government is upping the ante in terms of reducing packaging and eliminating superfluous waste and penalising those companies that don't with ever increasing landfill taxes.

Key aims for the project with Manchester Fort Shopping Park included improving the efficiency of waste collections, increasing recycling rates and reducing carbon emissions. New FEL containers were introduced for general waste, recycling and cardboard and wheeled bins were brought in for food waste: these were strategically placed in key locations to minimise staff travel time. An ISO shipping container has been placed on-site to store bulky waste items (for example, pallets and ex-display units) and an on-site recycling station handles wood, metal and glass.

Replacing most wheelie bins with large capacity FEL’s means that collection frequency was reduced from three times per week to just once a week, reducing the shopping parks carbon footprint and service charge costs. Out of more than 12 tonnes of waste collected in 2014, 89.07% was recycled or recovered. Going forward, the remaining residual waste will be converted to energy from waste, delivering a 100% diversion from landfill.
