Marathon Man Darrin aiming for ’50 Before 50′ to raise money for homeless charity Shelter

Categories: In The Community

homeless charityA 48-year-old senior manager at Wirral-based B&M Waste Services is putting his stamina to the test as he bids to run 50 marathons before turning 50.

Darrin Percy, from Ellesmere Port, is well on course to complete to complete the gruelling physical test having run 21 marathons, with 29 to go before his landmark birthday in just over 12 months’ time.

Darrin’s endeavour is raising money for national homeless charity Shelter, which has been chosen by B&M’s Manchester depot as its charity of the year.

He has already finished marathons including Chester, Anglesey, Bolton Hill and Grisedale – having started with the Shrewsbury Marathon in June 2013 – and is planning to complete his challenge at next year’s London Marathon.

Darrin, an Out Sourcing Manager at B&M Waste Services’ Bromborough site, said: “In 2013 I started taking part in marathons as part of a personal fitness drive. It had been several years since I ran regularly but I found that I was having such a great time that I should set myself the target of completing 50 marathons before I turn 50 in April 2015.

“I know it’s a big challenge and people have told me it’s a bit extreme, but to be almost half-way there already is very exciting – I have had amazing support from family and people at work who are really behind what I am doing. In the next couple of months I will be taking part in several marathons including the Lake District, Scottish Borders, Northampton and Manchester.
“I’m quite lucky in that I don’t tend to suffer injuries and am always in work the following day. The winter marathons have been hard, particularly running in the rain, so it will be nice to do some in brighter weather! I train with the Ellesmere Port Running Club and I have to say they have been a big help in preparing and keeping me on track.
“I think the Liverpool Rock and Roll Marathon in May will be a great event, especially as my friends, family and colleagues will be able to go along to show their support. Hopefully I will finish at the London Marathon – as a lad originally from North West London that would be the icing on the cake.”

Through B&M’s connections with homeless charity Shelter, Darrin is raising funds throughout his challenge and has set a target of £3,000 through his Just Giving page.
B&M launched a campaign in February called ‘Refuse Not Refuge’, to raise awareness of the dangers of homeless and vulnerable people sleeping in large waste containers. As part of the campaign, B&M has already made a substantial donation to Shelter.

Darrin added: “Shelter is a fantastic charity and I am very proud to be running on their behalf. If I can raise some money while undertaking this individual challenge I will be delighted. I have already had lots of donations from colleagues as well as B&M customers and want to say thank you to everyone for their support.”
