King’s School celebrates recycling success with B&M Waste Services

Categories: In The Community

outside kings schoolKing’s is one of England’s great independent schools, with a reputation for delivering outstanding education for more than five centuries. The school educates approximately 1350 children, from 3 to 18 year olds, through a successful blend of single-sex and co-education, and a vibrant curriculum that is designed to keep pupils engaged, challenged and eager to learn. They are this month celebrating the success of their recycling service with B&M Waste Services after achieving 100% diversion of waste from landfill.

Peter B Jackson, Estates Manager at The King’s School in Macclesfield, commented “I have been using B&M Waste Services for nearly three years and have generally been delighted with the service provided. They are a huge improvement on the previous contractor.

Peter continued “They have a contract with the school to collect our waste from eight different locations across three separate sites. This is our general waste, paper, cardboard waste and our food waste. The food waste collection has been particularly successful, if only judged by the removal of the kitchen macerators and no more blocked drains.”

Kings school Ian McKenzieIan McKenzie, Senior Business Development Manager at B&M Waste Services said “As with everything they do, environmental responsibilities are taken very seriously at King’s so it was important for their waste management partner to have equally high standards. We praise King’s and their staff for their forward-thinking approach and buy-in of the new waste strategy we have worked on together.”

King’s have numerous amount recycling bins located around their sites which are collected once a week. The cardboard and paper is then recycled into new products, the general waste is taken to B&M’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where any recyclables are removed before the residual waste is sent on for processing and 100% recovered as Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). Food waste is 100% recovered through conversion into renewable energy and nutrient-rich bio-fertiliser at an Anaerobic Digestion facility. B&M have also introduced a Haz Box where B&M flexibly collect and dispose of hazardous waste in a safe and compliant way.

With less disruption and no more wasted time fixing service issues, the results have been significant; King’s divert all waste from landfill and by doing so also save over 5,000 kg of carbon each month.
