Inspiring graduates of The Children’s University

Categories: B&M News

B&M Waste Services, who run an education programme focusing on the impact of waste on the environment and ways in which we can all reduce, reuse and recycle more, were welcomed as a guest speaker at The Children’s University Graduation Ceremony this week.

The Children’s University is a charity that works in partnership with schools to develop a love of learning in children. The scheme is committed to creating a level playing field of opportunity and opening up access to children of all backgrounds.

With 80 centres currently learning destinations, 1,000 schools and 100,000 children have been involved with the scheme so far. B&M Waste Services have recently been announced as a Children’s University Learning Destination, where they will welcome children that are part of the scheme to their state of the art innovation and education centre, Milner House.

Through the programme, students visit learning destinations to gain stamps that are later used to graduate from the scheme. Maria Williams, Education Programme Leader at B&M Waste, was invited to speak at the most recent Children’s University graduation at Edge Hill University. Edge Hill have adopted a Total Waste Management approach across the campus, in partnership with B&M Waste.

On the day, Maria spoke to students about her career path to becoming a successful geography and science high school teacher, and the routes that she took to achieve this. Maria also spoke about the importance of being environmentally conscious, and the ways in which B&M Waste take steps to reduce their environmental impact and support local schools in doing so too.

Speaking on the day, Maria Williams said: “The Children’s University is such a valuable resource to students aged 5-14 in the local area. The option to learn from different companies and establishments, based on the child’s interest, is a fantastic way to highlight the university experience to younger children. I am extremely thankful to The Children’s University for inviting me to speak on the day and I look forward to welcoming students to our innovation centre, Milner House, on 29th July!”
