Wigan and Leigh College is a Further and Higher Education College based at six locations across Wigan and Leigh in Greater Manchester. With 12,000 students and 400 staff, the college needed a comprehensive waste strategy and recycling solution.
Following an impressive tender application, B&M Waste Services won the waste contract at Wigan & Leigh College and work on developing an innovative waste strategy began.
Internal recycling bins were placed throughout the college’s refectory, allowing staff and students alike to easily segment and recycle Mixed Waste, Food Waste and General Waste. Cleaning staff then pile waste in designated areas (signed and branded), which is then moved by porters to an outside area.
The smooth introduction of this process was thanks to the initial training given by B&M Waste experts to college staff.
Staff also benefited massively from the introduction of a confidential waste strategy, ensuring that sensitive documents and data were destroyed securely and effectively.
Additionally, given that the college covers such a large site undergoing regular development, B&M Waste also began managing construction waste.
A staggering 98% of the college’s waste has been diverted from landfill.
Clear reporting now allows the college’s States Manager to see the extensive improvements being made throughout the college via its new and improved waste strategy.
“The performance of B&M Waste has been phenomenal. The introduction of Dry Mixed Recycling has been brilliant and I love the clear graphs and environmental reports that I’m presented with regularly. Our previous contractor offered particularly bad reporting but we’re now seeing a huge improvement.”
