North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NWBFT) were looking to further reduce their waste to landfill impact, as well as protecting patient and staff confidentiality ahead of GDPR regulation changes.
Working with B&M Waste and B&M Secure Shredding, two solutions were proposed. Regarding waste to landfill impact, recycling services were introduced to separate dry mixed recycling from general waste, whilst general waste which cannot be recycled is now processed into green energy at a combined heat and power plant.
Regarding GDPR compliance, a cost-reducing Secure Shredding service was introduced at over 100 Trust sites with 144 strategically-placed, lockable consoles, encouraging staff to shred confidential paper.
Thanks to the introduction of recycling services, as well as the processing of non-recyclable general waste, NWBFT is now sending zero waste to landfill. They also receive regular Environmental Reports from B&M Waste, which demonstrate the amount of waste collected, recycled and recovered, as well as the amount of trees and car miles saved in terms of KG as carbon, as waste is diverted from landfill.
With regards to the newly-introduced Secure Shredding service, confidential paperwork that’s fed into the consoles is firstly shredded and then 100% recycled.
Julie Westwell, Contract Manager Soft FM Services for the Trust said “The transition over to B&M Secure Shredding was like our waste service, very smooth. Cat and Sarah in the Shredding team, with Dave’s support were very professional and efficient in coming back to me with any queries I had when we first commenced the service, and ongoing the level of service has remained excellent.”
“The reports we receive offer us an audit trail and are very useful for the Trust’s annual Eric returns to demonstrate the trees and car miles have been saved through utilising B&M Waste and B&M Secure Shredding’s service. The reports are something other NHS Trusts could benefit from. For example, at our Chief Exec question time we use them. When patients and staff ask about recycling, we have the evidence with the reports to back up that we are doing the right thing”.
