Through ‘Partnerships’, ‘Manufacturing’ and ‘Service’, BKW Instruments bring together the world’s leading instrumentation companies to offer a single supply chain, delivered through a world-class manufacturing facility in Manchester. BKW’s experienced service team install, commission and calibrate client instruments on site, providing an extensive in-house service.
The company works hard to reduce its environmental impact as much as possible; chemical waste is minimal and the business goes as far as to re-use packaging by issuing products in blister packs, which are later collected and used again for the next batch. Additionally, foam is used to form packaging around a product, protecting it as much as possible whilst also avoiding excess packaging.
BKW Instruments has also undertaken an internal environmental audit to assess its procedures and consequently make them greener.
Whilst BKW was doing as much as possible to reduce its environmental impact – without compromising efficiency and service, the company was facing challenges with its waste management provider. Service and reliability issues as well as the provider’s lack of green initiatives resulted in the need for a new waste management strategy. Recognising B&M Waste as a local supplier, BKW Instruments contacted the company and was not only offered an improved – and greener – service but cost savings too.
A brand new waste strategy was implemented and regularly reviewed until March 2018 when it was identified that BKW could take their green strategy even further with the support of B&M Waste, replacing their existing FEL with segregated 1100L bins.
Consequently, the company now diverts 100% of its cardboard and general waste from landfill.
This is achieved for cardboard through B&M Waste’s sophisticated baling and recycling process, and general waste is used for Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). To ensure processes remain as green as possible, B&M provides regular in-depth Environmental Reports that highlight key facts such as the amount of carbon saved and the equivalent saved in terms of trees and car mileage.
“We’re really happy with the environmental process we’re making in terms of our waste strategy – and the business as a whole. Staff are engaged and committed to the initiative – and the results are evident.
“Our relationship with B&M Waste is great; they’re reliable, service has been great and there hasn’t been a single issue reported. In lines with our aim of being a Carbon Neutral business, the green credentials they offer hugely support our initiatives and the values of BKW. The environmental reports we receive from B&M are fantastic too; they demonstrate our work in a very real and relatable way.” – Alan Evans, QHSE Manager
“BKW are a dream customer; they’re engaged, proactive and keen to make a real difference. B&M Waste are so proud to have supported them in achieving 100% diversion from landfill and will continue to support them with in-depth environmental reports, internal signage to support the on-going learning process and, of course, a quality waste management service as standard.” – Josh Boult, B&M Waste Services
