Daniel Cleans Up

Categories: In The Community

When a young cancer patient, whose lifelong ambition is to be a binman on a front end loader bin wagon (FEL), contacted B&M Waste Services to see if he could fulfil this dream, the team were only too happy to help out.B&M CSR

Daniel Kinsella, from Wallasey, was diagnosed with leukaemia weeks before his fifth birthday in December 2012. Now at the grand old age of 6, he attends St George’s Primary School and is fascinated with all things waste related. From bin trucks to recycling, Daniel is fast becoming a young expert.

Daniel spent the morning, accompanied by his parents Michelle and Michael, having a tour of the B&M Waste Services recycling plant at Bromborough, watching what happens on site, sitting inside many of the vehicles and talking to many of the B&M Drivers and Operatives about their job with much enthusiasm. He also took the opportunity to investigate the B&M Secure Shredding facility, and see the equipment used. But by far the highlight of the day was the opportunity to sit in an FEL whilst in action emptying a bin.

Director of B&M Waste Services David Curtis said “Children like Daniel are a real inspiration. He is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable – I better watch out or he’ll be after my job next!”

Daniel said “I had a brilliant time. The FEL is my favourite bin truck and I can’t wait to be old enough to drive and operate one. The people I met were very friendly and it was so exciting seeing everything in real life.”

Michelle said “We had a lovely time. Daniel was absolutely buzzing before, during and after his visit. They were so welcoming at B&M, he got to see everything he wanted and more, and received a fabulous gift – ‘stinky the garbage truck’ toy which he played with the rest of the day. He still hasn’t stopped talking about the fun he had – it restores my faith in the world when people go above and beyond for him.”

Daniel is currently in remission and has his maintenance chemotherapy administered daily at home by his parents, which reduces the amount of time he has to spend at hospital and allows him to attend school as much as possible.

He is currently due to finish his treatment a day before his eighth birthday.

Michael added “We are so proud of Daniel and the way he just battles on through and gets on with things. He really is a little miracle.”
