B&M extends it’s Carbon Neutral commitment internationally

Categories: B&M News

carbon neutral commitmentB&M Waste Services is supporting an eco-friendly landfill gas project in Indonesia as part of its Carbon Neutral commitment.

The total waste management specialist is backing a substantial Landfill Gas Management & Power Generation project at the Bantargebang site – the biggest landfill in Indonesia covering 120 hectares. The Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) carbon offset project works to reclaim landfill gas which can then be converted into energy at the power plant.
B&M is working with Carbon Footprint Ltd* on the project in Indonesia, to offset its entire annual emissions of 2,783 tonnes of CO2.

Over the past three years B&M has offset more than 8,000 tonnes of CO2 through supporting a range of renewable energy projects in developing countries such as Vietnam and India. This is equivalent to 40million miles in a family car or the annual output of 800 UK households.

Mick Ashall, Director at B&M, said: “Our commitment to total waste management whilst remaining carbon neutral since 2011 make this project a perfect match for B&M, and one which we are very proud of. We are keen to share our own best practices in recycling, protect the environment from greenhouse gas emissions and help the local community with those in the developing world.

“The project in Indonesia is creating 1,500 jobs for local people, as well as significant improvements to the health and working conditions of on-site workers. This includes better sanitary conditions, the provision of clean water and education programmes to encourage recycling and energy generation from landfill gas. Each year the project will save more than 700,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions – a huge amount which will make a real difference to the environment across the region.

“Carbon Footprint supports a range of carbon offsetting projects, but as a waste and recycling specialist, we felt that this landfill project had a real synergy with our aims and our commitment to achieve zero landfill waste here in the UK.”

B&M Waste Services, which operates across the UK with regional offices in Merseyside, Manchester, Leeds and Norwich, achieved Carbon Neutrality (to PAS2060) in 2011.

Mick Ashall added: “We are totally committed to ensuring our business does not have a negative impact on the environment and are continually looking at new ways to ensure we have as little impact ourselves as possible. B&M also supports projects and schemes both locally and internationally to offset our own carbon emissions.

“Last year for example we planted 100 trees at a hospice in Merseyside and are now working on a tree planting campaign called ‘Time In The Environment’ at Parrs Wood High School in Manchester, which will create a green area for pupils and staff.

“Our continuing Carbon Reduction Commitment mean we will carry on looking at and implementing new and innovative ways to remain Carbon Neutral.”
