B&M wins Prestigious NHS Award

Categories: B&M News

B&M Waste Services, the North West’s largest independent waste management company, took second place for prestigious healthcare award.

The company came in highly commended for the Sustainable Development Award in the NHS Excellence in Supply Awards North West 2014.

B&M, which has sites in Wirral, Manchester and Norwich, provides businesses and organisations with carbon-neutral total waste management solutions including trade waste, hazardous waste, secure shredding, drainage and recycling.

The NHS Excellence in Supply Awards North West recognises businesses which have supplied goods and services to NHS Trusts in the North West. B&M Waste Services received the award for helping a range of NHS Trusts improve their environmental efficiency by adopting a range of technologies and services to avoid land fill. B&M Waste implements a range of services including segregation, training and carbon reporting for a large number of trusts including Aintree University Hospital, North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, Mersey Care Trust and NHS Property Services Merseyside.NHS excellence in supply

Rose Warnock, B&M Corporate Contracts Manager, said that Aintree University Hospital was a first class example of the benefits a comprehensive waste management solution can deliver to health care organisations across the UK.

Rose said: “Several of the initiatives we have undertaken in partnership with Aintree University Hospital have been industry leading in the healthcare sector.  We are delighted that the NHS Excellence in Supply Awards recognised our approach with Aintree University Hospital as an example of best practice in the NHS.”

Merseyside-headquartered B&M was initially brought in by Aintree  to manage its general waste, but the company’s remit was soon extended to cover offensive waste segregation and disposal as well as introducing a recycling programme for cardboard, plastic and metal.

Working closely with hospital management, B&M assisted with the design of the waste compound and also designed a bespoke waste compactor to deploy the latest compactor technology. B&M also installed 450 bins at Aintree, introduced a confidential document shredding service and a dedicated battery collection and recycling service.

B&M also provided comprehensive training for more than 500 of the hospital’s domestic and clinical staff in how to segregate the waste safely and effectively. As a result of the new segregation system, the hospital recycled over 900 tonnes of waste in 2013/14, compared to approximately 50 tonnes in 2010. In the last two years, cardboard recycling alone has increased more than three-fold (to 174 tonnes in 2013/14) with 50 tonnes less general waste produced per annum, of which over 80 per cent is currently recycled.

Rose said: “Over the last 12 months – B&M Waste has helped more than thirteen NHS trusts implement effective waste management solutions –driving significant improvements in efficiency and dramatically reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill.  Our ethos focuses on making cultural changes within NHS Trusts and working with client in collaboration to drive a positive change to the environment.”
