B&M helps University of Chester achieve 99% Recycling Rate

Categories: B&M News

B&M Waste Services has been awarded a new three-year waste management contract by the University of Chester.  B&M Waste commenced working with the University in 2011 and has been re-awarded the contract until 2017 and will continue to provide all waste management services across all sites.

A key reason for their success in re-securing the waste contract was the transformation of the University’s recycling policy – with the University now achieving a recycling rate of 99 per cent.

Kevin Wood, Commercial Manager of B&M Waste Services said: “In 2011, when we initially started to provide waste services to the University, its recycling rate was just 19 per cent. B&M Waste Services worked collaboratively with Jacquie Gaffney, the Head of Operations of Facilities for Estates and Premises at the University of Chester to set ambitious targets. By October 2014, we had achieved a recycling rate of 99 per cent.”

All of the university’s non-recyclable waste is sent to B&M’s brand new £1million Refuse Derived Fuel facility at its site in Trafford Park, Manchester. All non-recyclable residual waste is compacted into bales and transported to a Combined Heat and Power Facility. Energy is then harvested from the residual waste to produce electricity and also steam which produces thermal heating via the district heating system.

B&M Waste Services also recycles the University’s old furniture, donating suitable items to Shelter to be restored, upcycled and sold in their network of retail outlets to raise funds for the charity.

Kevin further added: “B&M’s commercial ethos is to divert as much material from landfill as possible – recycling used furniture is part of this commitment. Our recycled furniture campaign also helps to raise valuable funds for the charity and a large portion of the University’s old furniture has been donated to Shelter.”

The University of Chester has campuses in Chester and Warrington.  The University operates out of three sites in Chester: the Parkgate Road Campus, the Riverside Campus and Kingsway Buildings.  The University’s Warrington Campus is a contained site covering 35 acres. The University has also recently acquired Thornton Science Park, near Ellesmere Port in Cheshire which is home to the University’s new Faculty of Science and Engineering.

As part of its service offering, B&M Waste Services provides a food waste collection service across all campuses – including the NoW FOOD Centre (North West Food Research Development Centre), a centre of excellence for small to medium sized food businesses.

Jacquie Gaffney, Head of Operations for Estates and Premises at the University of Chester, said that B&M Waste Services has made a significant impact on the environmental performance of the University.

Jacquie said: “The University of Chester takes sustainability extremely seriously. The University launched its Green Chester initiative to encourage our staff and students to consider the environment in all aspects of their daily life. How we manage our waste is key to this and the results we have achieved in our waste management and recycling policy with B&M speak for themselves.

“We have found the collaborative nature of our relationship extremely beneficial. They undertake regular training initiatives with more than 70 University staff to ensure that we secure the best possible results. We look forward to working with B&M Waste Services over the next three years to continue to implement the most advanced waste initiatives.”

Mick Ashall, Director of B&M Waste Services, said “This is another significant contract Mick B&M Wastewin and continues the business’s positive performance in 2014. We are continually looking at ways to innovate and expand, while keeping a strong focus on client relationships and customer service.”

B&M Waste Services provides total waste management solutions for local authorities, public sector organisations and businesses across the UK. The business employs more than 170 people with offices in Merseyside, Manchester, and Norwich.
