B&M advise SMEs on change in waste definition

Categories: B&M News

With a customer base of over 7000, national waste management company B&M Waste Services are today issuing guidance to SMEs of the change to the legal definition of ‘waste’.Managing Director Neil Curtis

Having been in the industry for over 17 years, Carbon Neutral B&M Waste are advising customers of guidance which was issued on 5th May. Published jointly by Defra, the Environment Agency, the Welsh Government, Northern Ireland’s Department of the Environment and Natural Resources Wales, the guidance can be used to determine if a material is waste or not, and whether it is subject to waste handling laws.

The guidance includes details of the waste duty of care to which businesses who import, produce, carry, keep, treat or dispose of waste must adhere as well as the producer responsibility rules for producers of packaging, electrical equipment and batteries must apply.

Additionally the guidance also details when waste rules cease to apply, such as when a material meets ‘end of waste’ status. The published guidance can be found here:

This latest guidance helps small and medium sized companies understand their waste, and in particular we urge customers to consider how they are disposing of their waste electrical and electronic equipment and batteries.”

“We offer a series of solutions for waste segregation and recycling, bespoke to customer requirements, and more recently we launched our B&M Haz Box. This provides a solution to businesses with small amounts of hazardous materials such as batteries, bleach, bulbs and other small chemical based items, for storage and regular collection.
