100% recycling success for The Plaza

Categories: B&M News

The Plaza on Oxford Street, London and B&M Waste Services are working together to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill. As of the 1st January a new TEEP legislation came in to place which states that all businesses must segregate their recyclable waste where technically, environmentally and economically practicable to do so. So for the past few months, adhering to the latest legislation B&M and The Plaza have implemented new ways of segregating waste. The Plaza, Oxford Street

Since working with B&M, The Plaza have reduced the frequency of their waste collections from twice daily to three collections per week. This has been achieved thanks to the introduction of a new card baler and waste compactor on site. The installation of the compactor alone has already reduced the businesses carbon emissions due to less collections being required and fewer vehicles being used.

B&M will continue to work with The Plaza and assess waste segregation to see if there are further improvements to be made utilising the latest technology and innovations.

100% recycling rates have now been achieved by The Plaza thanks to the segregation as well as B&M’s commitment to zero waste to landfill. This is achieved through residual waste being baled and sent to a combing heat and power plant to generate green energy.Mick Ashall, Director B&M Waste Services

John Tierny, Facilities Manager for Cushman and Wakefield who manage the facilities at the property said “As B&M Waste Services are carbon neutral and have had a number of success in improving recycling rates, and reducing environmental impact of other buildings in London such as the iconic 110 Bishopsgate, they were the natural partner for our project. Our aim was to introduce recycling and improve our carbon impact, whilst working with tenants to ensure they bought into the new project.

Mick Ashall, Director at B&M Waste Services “The team at The Plaza have been very forward thinking and enthusiastic about the implementation of recycling throughout the site. We all know reducing congestion throughout Central London is something all businesses are striving towards, and with the reduction in number of collections through these new initiatives The Plaza are leading the way in achieving this goal. We look forward to working with other businesses in the area to roll out recycling solutions and further reduce the carbon impact of waste management in Central London. ”
